Discover the magnificence and grandeur of Carnarvon Gorge, a secret place in the semi-arid heart of Central Queensland. This is Queensland’s answer to the Kimberleys. Here, the combination of wild dramatic scenery and ancient aboriginal culture will lift your spirits and capture your imagination.

Carnarvon Gorge features towering white sandstone cliffs about 25 million years old, pre-historic cycads more than 2,000 years old, and world-recognised aboriginal art sites containing as many as 2,000 images - petroglyphs, ochre stencils and free-hand paintings. These are some of the finest examples of aboriginal stencil and engraving techniques in the world, that provide an insight into the lives of the Gorge’s first people.

Home to a spectacular array of wildlife, extraordinary scenery and some of the freshest air you’ll ever breathe - this is nature at its purest. The springs and creeks of the Gorge support a mosaic of habitats. Waterfalls, endemic fan palms, ancient cycads, ferns and flowering shrubs line the main gorge, while remnant rainforest flourishes in the sheltered side-gorges. Crystal-clear creeks attract a wide variety of wildlife, with over 170 bird species inhabiting or visiting the Park.

Experience bushwalking paradise

With a variety of walks to choose from, the Gorge is a hiker’s paradise. Towering cliffs form a spectacular steep-sided gorge with narrow vibrantly-coloured side gorges. Boulder-strewn Carnarvon Creek (a tributary of the Dawson River) winds through the gorge. The Park’s highlight is the Scenic Walking Track through the centre of the Gorge, accessing the amazing geological formations.

Experience glamping at its finest at Wallaroo, a 30,000 hectare cattle property nestled among the magnificent sandstone cliffs of the Carnarvon Ranges, approximately 160km north of Roma.
