The Falkland Islands lie in the South Atlantic Ocean, about 500 km east of South America. The archipelago consists of East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 smaller islands. The islands' capital is Stanley, on East Falkland. While the islands have been officially British since 1833, Argentina has always maintained its claim to the territory. In 1982, Argentina invaded and occupied the Falklands, however Britain retook the islands in the Falklands War. The population is 3,000 and the main language is English.The islands are home to large bird populations, and the main economic activities are fishing, tourism and sheep farming.
