Join Aurora Expeditions on one of these special voyages to Papua New Guinea in April 2012.

A special commemorative voyage From Alotau to Rabaul will mark the 70th anniversary of Australia’s involvement in Papua New Guinea during WWII. Another voyage explores New Guinea’s coast from Alotau to the mighty Speik River and back. Both voyages will explore remote islands, pristine beaches, snorkel and dive in the colourful coral reefs, and witness the diverse array of PNG’s colourful traditions and customs.

On one of Aurora's expedition-style Papua New Guinea cruises, warriors brandish bows and arrows, clubs and sharp spears, then warmly welcome you into their village. Snorkel in clear tropical waters, floating gently above rich coral reefs alive with nudibranchs, reef sharks, batfish and rays. A dawn chorus alerts you to blue-eyed cockatoos, wagtails, perhaps an enormous blyth's hornbill. Such are the delights of authentic experiences and holidays in Papua New Guinea.

Wild and mysterious, travel in Papua New Guinea will reveal a tropical paradise of rainforest, reef, volcanic islands and a thousand different cultures. Aurora's expedition ship, Akademik Shokalskiy, will take you into the vast Sepik river for tours into remote villages. Onshore, guided Papua New Guinea tours explore the Bismark Archipelago and historic Rabaul with its world of wrecks and volcanoes. Papua New Guinea diving is some of the best in the world, and you will discover diverse coral reefs, teeming with life. Dive in Papua New Guinea, or choose to swim and snorkel as well.

Papua New Guinea holidays offer the chance to marvel at spectacular costumes, enchanting sing-sings and admire some of the world's most expressive primitive art. This is where Aurora's expert naturalists, historians and anthropologists, who know and love the region, become a vital source of knowledge, helping you to understand and interpret this intriguing culture and ancient land. Aurora Expeditions believes that a sensitive and sustainable approach to the way Papua New Guinea tourism integrates with villagers, who encounter very few outside visitors, is an essential element of all voyages.

Whether it be an onshore Papua New Guinea tour, or onboard the stunning ship, Aurora's expeditions allow you to discover the hidden east coast, sail through remote tranquil isles, visit active volcanic islands and explore pristine rainforests. This is Papua New Guinea travel, expedition-style, where the itinerary adjusts to tides, weather, and local customs. Aurora Expeditions considers flexibility the key to a rewarding Papua New Guinea vacation.

About Aurora Expeditions

Aurora Expeditions is an Australian adventure company specialising in expedition-style travel to the world's wildest and remotest places.

Founded in 1992, owner-explorers Greg and Margaret Mortimer, veterans of almost three decades of Antarctic research, mountaineering and polar travel, set out to share their passion for Antarctica with like-minded travellers. Their aim was simple – to take small groups of travellers on voyages of discovery to regions that inspired them, thereby creating lifelong ambassadors for the preservation and protection of these sacred environments.

Over the years Aurora has expanded its scope from polar exploration to include new, rarely explored destinations such as Papua New Guinea & the Russian Far East. In its quest to seek destinations that push the boundaries of travel, it has purposely kept the numbers of participants on each departure small, allowing more intimate encounters with wildlife and cultures, and lessening its impact on the regions visited.

Under the guidance of experienced leaders who have a great respect for natural and cultural environments, Aurora Expeditions continues to approach expedition travel as a catalyst for making a difference in one's life, and in the world.

Aurora Expeditions believes travel by small ship is the safest, most efficient and enjoyable way to unlock the exquisite secrets of this fascinating country. Aurora Expeditions purposely avoid visiting the major towns and cities, instead concentrating its visits to remote coastal and island villages.

Aurora Expeditions' style of travel means that many of its expedition stops are unplanned. A flexible itinerary, combined with its fleet of Zodiacs, gives Aurora Expeditions the spontaneity to explore the wild beauty of Papua New Guinea as opportunities arise. In this way Aurora hopes to gain a genuine insight into a traditional lifestyle that has changed little in centuries.

Aurora Expeditions voyages are not about observing the country and its people from afar. Aurora consciously aims to immerse its passengers in the environment and, through a combination of first hand experiences and education, come away with a greater understanding of this remote corner of the world.

On board will be a team of expert expedition staff and guest lecturers who will help you comprehend each day – from interpretations of cultural traditions by our anthropologist, to identifying exotic bird and fish species with our naturalists.
